Hector James Peabody aka. Mr. Peabody is the main protagonist of Peabody's Improbable History, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and the 2015 animated television series The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show. He is the adoptive father/master and professor of Sherman, who accompanies him on his travels through history.

Biography[]

Mr. Peabody, a Nobel Laureate and two-time Olympic medalist, lived in a luxurious penthouse apartment in New York City. At age three he graduated with honors from Harvard University. He was an accomplished stockbroker and served in several government capacities, including foreign service translator and research programme director.

Despite his enormous success, Peabody was a lonely dog. To solve this problem, he determined to adopt a boy for company. After a lengthy search, Peabody stumbled across Sherman at the Hardrock Orphanage. A legal battle ensued over Peabody's right, as a dog, to raise a boy. He won the case, and the inseparable duo was formed.

It soon proved difficult for the intellectual Mr. Peabody to raise a boy within the confines of his apartment. The solution to this problem, the WABAC time machine, was built to provide his new charge with room to roam. They go to Rome, but they cannot understand what they are saying, so Mr. Peabody readjusts the machine from a time machine into a "should have been machine", contaminating the past with anachronisms and the historical figures acting weird and speaking English.

Physical Appearance[]

Mr. Peabody is a white, anthropomorphic dog of the beagle breed. Being a dog, he is inherently shorter than his companion and has a straight tail. The near-sighted intellectual is meticulously consistent in his wardrobe, and is always seen wearing a red bow tie with large, round glasses. In earlier, lower-quality cartoons his glasses and tie appear brown or red.

Personality[]

As the world's greatest thinker, Mr. Peabody has developed a pompous, egotistical character. In spite of this, he does what he can to give Sherman a happy home, tries to save history from being ruined, and always is pulling for the underdog.

Abilities[]

Mr. Peabody is the most intelligent, knowledgeable inventor the world has ever known. Indeed, it seems as if there is no subject that he has not studied.

He is a "superhuman" mathematician, able to make infinitely complex calculations with apparent ease. In addition, Mr. Peabody is an enthusiastic historian, speaks every language fluently, and has mastered every musical instrument known to man.

Trivia[]

  • The internet archive Wayback machine, used to record extant webpages, is named after Peabody's WABAC machine.
  • Mr. Peabody and Sherman are referenced in the 1985 film Back To The Future.
  • Mr. Peabody looks like Mickey Mouse in his iconic bright red cotton fabric overall shorts with yellow buttons and no shoulder straps. And Mickey Mouse is also a secondary father to Pinocchio from Walt Disney's animated film Pinocchio just like Mr. Peabody is Sherman's adopted father.
